Heap general unfaithfulness to the book onto that and add the freeze frame shot at the ending that probably would have fit better with a cheesy 80s sports ballad a la Karate Kid as the cherry on top and you can surely see why it's not my favorite.

It's competent enough on its own, but lacks consistency with the other films and that's something I consider a cardinal sin when it's part of a multi movie franchise. It really sticks out like a sore thumb when watching the films back to back which I've done probably dozens of times. Again, the music itself isn't bad, but it is a complete shift from what we'd become familiar with, and that's my biggest issue with the film. My only thought is that as John Williams was also working on Star Wars at the time, that he didn't want the soundtracks to sound too similar (and at times you can hear moments when they are), so he did away with the sweeping strings and magical melodies and instead wrote a medieval inspired score. The soundtrack was, while not bad in itself, also extremely distinct among all the films. Hogwarts no longer feels like a magical school, but a prop. On top of this, the film doesn't truly emphasize the setting. I also get a little bit of second hand embarrassment whenever the night bus scene comes on and the shrunken head with the Jamaican accent starts shooting off one liners.

The shift in tone was also extremely jarring because it was such a sharp contrast to its predecessors. In the United States, a PG-13 rating means that parents are strongly cautioned against bringing children younger than 13 years old, but they are still. I felt like it was really out of place in the series. This is the first movie in the Harry Potter series that raised the film rating from PG.
